Medical Student Revue

A Harry Potter themed sketch show raised over £2,000 for charity in memory of two medical students.

The recipients of the 2011 medical students’ revue, which was held over two nights at the University of Warwick student union, will be decided by the revue committee over the next few months.

The performances were dedicated to fellow medical students Claire Freeman, who died of bowel cancer in December 2009, and Stewart Goodwin from London who died in July due to a heart syndrome.

Twenty-five-year-old Liz Barnfield, who is a final year medical student from Solihull, said: “Every year during Freshers’ Week we produce the medical students’ revue for first year medical students to take them through what they are in store for in a humorous way.

“This year the theme was Harry Potter and we had a week to put it together which involved the writing, the songs and the dances so it was, as always, a bit chaotic.

“We had good fun and we performed one night for the freshers and staff and a second night for the second, third and fourth year students.

“Claire and Stewart should have been involved with us so it was tinged with sadness.

“The medical students’ revue committee decided the beneficiaries of the £2,400 raised in and we are very pleased to annouce that Grace Research Fund received £600.00.

“We have been doing paediatric placements this year and we have talked to some of the parents on the neo-natal unit who have told us about the great work of the Grace Research Fund so it is great we were able to make a donation to allow them to continue their great work.”

Dr Andy Coe, consultant paediatrician at University Hospital in Coventry, said the medical students’ revue was always a fun night.

He said: “The cast is made up of huge numbers of medical students and I would like to say a big thanks to everyone for giving up their time whether it was performing on the stage or working hard behind the scenes.

“The play was nothing like the Harry Potter films – JK Rowling has nothing to worry about! – but it produced lots of laughter throughout the show and we are grateful to receive such a sizeable donation to the Grace Research Fund from the previous year’s performances.”
